For the first time since launching in 2019, UK-based Traced Ltd has introduced an in-app subscription to premium security features into its free security app, so that iOS and Android users can stay protected against phishing attacks and malicious web content as they browse the web.

Safe Browsing is the first feature Traced is including in Trustd Plus, and it’s available to both iOS and Android users. Safe Browsing is the same enterprise-grade available to customers of their business threat solution – Trustd MTD, and Traced is offering it to consumers to upgrade their on-device security for a low monthly subscription.

The introduction of premium features via Trustd Plus is a first for Traced, which has been acclaimed with an average 4.5 star rating across over 8000 reviews globally on Google Play. Users appreciate Traced’s privacy-first ethos and threat detection capabilities.

What is Safe Browsing and how does it protect against phishing?
Mobile phishing attacks are on the rise (in fact, they increased 700% in the first half of last year (Source: Proofpoint data). There’s smishing, vishing, phishing over social media and email, and there’s also phishing content on the web that lures a target to download a malicious app or enter their private details into a form.

The free Trustd app protects consumers against phishing by scanning phishing links in text messages, email apps, productivity and messaging apps like Slack, WhatsApp, Skype and social media – blocking the link from opening.

Safe Browsing in Trustd Plus provides a deeper layer of phishing protection. It detects and blocks fake and malicious websites while users browse the web from any app. Safe Browsing would detect malicious websites such as those used in the Dracarys and Malibot malware campaigns, preventing users from accessing the sites before they could download the infected app. In phishing attacks that present forms that send sensitive data back to the attackers, Safe Browsing would block those webpages from opening before a victim can enter any personal information.

To experience peace of mind when browsing the web, users can subscribe to Trustd Plus through the Trustd app. Download from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).

About Traced
The Traced (https://traced.app) team of security and privacy evangelists has won several cybersecurity awards and works with Microsoft’s MISA program, the Coalition Against Stalkerware, and the NCSC for Startups. Combining the threat intelligence from 250k+ protected mobile devices with that of other industry vendors, Traced’s ever-evolving AI technology stays one step ahead of the cyber criminals, protecting individuals and businesses from data loss from mobile phishing attacks, compromised WiFi networks, unpatched devices, malware and leaky apps.

Without a doubt, smartphones were one of the best inventions of our lifetime.

However, the majority of people have phones with bits of software that they are completely oblivious to. Similar to our post on Cool Things You Didn’t Know About Your iPhone, there may be a few time-saving (and completely genius) tips and tricks that you can do on an Android phone, that you didn’t know previously.

Swipe to Type

swipe to type android

One of Android’s greatest features is the swipe to type option.

If you’re lay in bed half asleep and it’s too cold to have both of your arms outside of the duvet at the same time, this option is essential for you! Although it is not available directly through the phone itself, it’s free to download from the Google Play store (through Google Keyboard).

Instead of moving your finger tapping around the screen, simply drag your finger from letter to letter to create your text message, tweet or email.

Take a screenshot

Gone are the days when we had to use ScreenMunch to grab a screenshot on Android phone, and it’s not only Apple products that can take advantage of clean screen-shotting.

Click the home, power and volume up buttons simultaneously (or just the home and power button on an S4) and it will instantly save an image of the screen to your camera roll, so you can look back on it at any time!

Check your battery status

battery life android

A slightly nerdier option (but cool nonetheless) is Android’s feature to check the status of your phone battery.

Key-in the digits *#0228# into your phonepad and you’ll get to see the voltage, ADC and RSSI readings of your battery. We can’t guarantee you’ll get any use out of this one, but it’s a good one to know about!

Skip the track

Another Android app that you’ll probably get the most out of in the Winter time is Pocket Skip Track.

How many times have you been listening to music whilst you’re walking along, but it’s too cold to get your phone out of your pocket to change the song? You can now keep your phone IN your pocket and change the song by just clicking the volume buttons. It’s such a simple but essential Android app!

Plug-in mouse

Again, a really nerdy suggestion but did you know that you could use a mouse to navigate around your Android phone?

Simply plug in a mouse with the mini-USB connector and navigate your way through text messages, photos and emails. Say goodbye to greasy fingerprints!

Facial Recognition Lock

android facial recognition

If you’re paranoid about the privacy settings on your Android phone, there’s always an option for using it’s facial recognition software to unlock your phone.

Go to Settings > Security > Screen Lock and choose ‘facial recognition lock’ as your unlocking option, then take images of yourself so that the software can recognize your face. Once you’ve set it up, you just have to hold the phone in front of you and the phone will unlock it instantly.

For people worried about their privacy, Android can also do a presence check. This avoids any chances of a person using a photo of your to unlock the phone, as you need to blink in order for the phone to unlock!

Surveillance Camera

ip webcam android

Your phone can also double-up as a surveillance camera; which is perfect for if you’re going on holiday and worried about your home.

The IP Webcam Android app has multiple viewing options and you can set it up anywhere in the house for 24/7 monitoring and surveillance. It even records the video as it happens!

Silence the Call

If you’re stuck in a busy meeting or in work, it’s really simple to silence and ignore the phone call without even touching your phone. All you need to do is cover the screen with your hand (or turn it over so the screen is facing down) and the call will be silenced straight away.

Before you go waving your hand over the phone, you need to enable Palm Motion. To do this, go to Settings > My Device > Motions and Gestures > Palm Motion.

What’s your favourite hidden tip for an Android phone? We’d love to know!

As people begin to spend more and more on mobile phones and the technology becomes more and more brittle and expensive to replace, there has been a rising number of people asking for a device that can handle a more challenging life without compromising on features.

Fonerange attempt to answer that call with their Rugged Android device.

The Rugged Android is a waterproof, shockproof and dustproof phone made to survive up to 30 minutes underwater, endure the everyday drops dealt by even the most prolific butter fingers and remain unscathed by dust from anything from a building site to a sandstorm.

On the tech front the phone offers Android 4.0, Dual SIM capabilities, a 3.5mm audio jack and speaker as well as a 3.5″ touch screen display and long battery life. Plus access to the android stores ever-growing list of apps.

Unfortunately, to call this phone “rugged” seems like a bit of an overstatement as the most important feature of such a phone, the shockproof feature, is severely lacking. Coming with a warning in the box that drops of over 1.2 metres (under 4ft) will cause damage to the phone.

At 6ft 2″, if I was to be standing and reading off this phone I would be holding it higher than 1.2 metres which seems like a pretty big flaw. One of the better features of the phone’s ability to survive drops is the screw-on back piece that keeps the battery from falling out, though still much more fiddly than the option taken by Apple with iPhone.

This phone is a budget smart phone and that is very obvious using the device but for £89.99, is extremely good value but if you’re looking for a phone able to withstand the elements, it would be worth considering investing more.

Ever since Google launched the Nexus range of products, we have seen quite a bit of innovation in their phones and tablets. Dual Cores, Quad cores and 1-2 GBs of RAM – Google has been very quick when it comes to adapting the latest and greatest technologies into their devices. Nexus 5 is no different. The main and most talked about feature of the phone is obviously its operating system, Android Kit Kat. Nexus 5 is the first mobile phone to publicly feature the latest iteration of the Android software. It has some other features to go along with the software as well, like the 8 MP camera, the 2.26 GHz processor, Adreno 330 GPU and 2 full Gigabytes of RAM.

nexus-5

While the Nexus 5 has its fair share of problems, there are some really good things that this flagship mobile phone from Google brings to the table. We write about a few of them below:

1. The Price

While $349 isn’t really low-price for a phone, it is though the best $349 you will spent on any smart-phone considering the features you are getting for your money. You get an unlocked phone without any contracts and you can use it anywhere in the world. You don’t have to pay a monthly fee for data or voice minutes you don’t use. You are getting best-in-class processor (2.3 GHz) and best in class GPU for almost half the price of next competing phone.

2. The Screen

nexus-5-features

Apart from being a massive 4.95 inch, the screen has a 1080p resolution and an astonishing pixel density of 445 pixels per inch. The colors look great on the screen and pictures look lively. The screen is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with IPS technology.

3. The CPU

Nexus 5 has a 2.26 Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor that makes the phone very responsive and snappy for doing daily tasks and then some. Launching apps, taking photos, playing games and editing videos is a piece of cake – thanks to this processor and the 2 GB RAM that goes along with it.

4. The OS

Nexus 5 brings Android 4.4 KitKat to the masses. This latest iteration of Android OS is quicker, power savvy, and more stable than any previous versions of Android. It consumes less RAM and delivers more performance. Apart from that, KitKat also brings a “Light” theme to the Android. White colors take more screen space than blacks as was the case with the previous Android Software version. It also bring easier voice search and voice activation to the Android devices. Searching anything on the internet is as easy as saying “Okay, Google” to your device, quite literally.

5. The Camera

Although many have touted the 8MP camera on this phone as mediocre at best, you can’t get a batter camera in any phone at the price of what you are paying for the Nexus 5. The camera has Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and HDR+. Both these features help you good pictures but it is in no way a replacement for your DSLR or a regular point and shoot for that matter.

Smart phones have pretty much become life support for millions of people. They’re as portable as your wallet, and their ever-increasing production means you can fulfill your every need and your every desire with the tap of your finger. They can organize your schedule, help you socialize with friends, manage your bank account, scan QR codes to receive voucher codes from retailers, find the closest froyo shop, and that’s the tip of the app iceberg.

But with all this frenzied app creation and consumption, there comes a dark side: the pervasive collection of users’ data, many times without their knowledge. We’ve compiled a list of the apps that may get your personal identity in the most trouble.

Latitude

the latitude app

Latitude is one of those apps that doesn’t really hide the fact that it’s transmitting your personal information, but it definitely divulges an undeniably personal level of detail when you’re signed on: your exact physical location.

Granted the app handles profile viewers much the same as any other social media – you must confirm who your friends are and you can quit anytime – but considering the havoc social sites such as Facebook have reeked on people’s lives, it’s easy to see how things could go awry.

For example, if you decide, one day, to scan the world map to see where your “friends” are residing, you may be surprised to find two dots that happen to be right on top of each other. Two friendly phones set on a coffee table, or two of your friends doing the hanky-panky?

If it’s not speculation and gossip you’re worried about, then turn your attention to some of your less scrupulous “friends.” There have already been documented stories of vacationers’ away messages hinting burglars to empty houses ripe for the plucking. With Latitude, you don’t even need to leave town for the weekend to be had; one of your “friends” just has to see that you happen to be cruising the shopping mall on the opposite side of town.

Google Searches – Maps, Web, etc.

google apps

If you’re so sure you’d never be so stupid as to give away your location information, think about Google’s Maps or Web searches. While you may be under the impression that your location information is merely between you and Google to get you to the closest vegan, gluten-free café in town, think again. The truth is you agreed when you downloaded the app that Google could share your data with third parties.

While Google uses the defense of full disclosure (i.e. it mentions what data the app has access to in the fine print before the download occurs), it is believed that many independently created apps could be violating these rules.

Facebook

the facebook app

Facebook is another giant that was found to be divulging information; in this case phone IDs that could potentially give third-party advertisers your name and friends list. The mere scale of this is what makes it most disturbing – tens of millions of people according to a Wall Street Journal investigation.

Paper Toss

the paper toss app

Despite the fact that many smartphone owners justify the device’s purchase based on its ability to offer a vast array of life management capabilities, games are believed to be the most downloaded type of app. Which brings us to Paper Toss; one review lauds the thrilling prospect that this game is “so realistic, you will think you are stuck in an office killing time”.

If the lure of workplace drudgery digitized at your fingerprints is too much to avoid, consider what kind of information Paper Toss collects and distributes about its users. Turns out, the app game has already given out users’ unique phone ID number to several different ad companies.

And, depending on what kind of phone you have, the ID number can give a range of information. Apple’s UDID is a 40-digit alphanumeric code that acts as a lifelong serial number for the phone. Android phones have an Android ID that is able to be reset. BOTH are transmitted unknowingly by several app providers. To make it more complicated is the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, an ID number that is used to lock phones when users report them stolen. Five Android apps were already found to be sending this number to one or more outside companies.

Pandora

the pandora app

Pandora is one of the most downloaded apps for smartphones, and with good reason. Who doesn’t love streaming music digitally cooked to perfection?

The point is that Android and iPhone versions of this wildly popular app have been revealed to transmit information about users’ age, gender, and location. Age and gender data are usually fodder for marketing companies, nothing too wildly insidious. But why must location play a role in designing music tastes? Is Pandora embarking on a journey to change the world, one song at a time? “Oh, look, this user is walking along the bridge, skip Van Halen’s “Jump”” Or is it for control over the masses? “User has entered assimilation facility; cue up Pink Floyd’s “Welcome to the Machine.”

So, next time you’re zipping through your smart phone’s app store with reckless abandon, stop and ponder who might be watching and just how much they already know.

Samsung’s latest high-power smartphone has attracted a great deal of attention online. The Android-powered Galaxy S is packed with technology and loaded with cool features, giving the Korean tech giant a serious chance at toppling this month’s iPhone frenzy. Backed up by some neat software and one of the largest companies in technology, the Galaxy S could be the biggest disrupter of 2010.

Apple’s most recent handset has catapulted the Cupertino-based technology company back into the limelight, pushing a series of recent PR mistakes and iPad jokes into the past. But while the iPhone continues to break sales records, Google’s Android operating system has been sneaking up behind it, capturing market share and converting a great deal of cellphone users to a more open platform.

With devices like the Galaxy S on its side, it’s not hard to see why. Samsung’s latest mobile phone certainly takes a few design cues from the iPhone, although with its own distinct feature set and a distinctly powerful engine inside its enclosure it doesn’t feel like a cheap copy. The phone’s design is familiar and quite usable, drawing inspiration from both HTC and Apple devices.

A four-inch touchscreen is the obvious centrepiece, giving users a simple platform for browsing the internet or searching for applications. Movement isn’t detected quite as smoothly or intuitively as on Apple’s most recent iPhone, although usability on the Galaxy S is far above standard. Shifting from one screen to another is simple, however we noticed some slightly slowdown when changing apps quickly.

Android’s strength is its customizability, and the Galaxy S certainly doesn’t disappoint. Samsung has left few restrictions on the phone’s interface, allowing users to change virtually anything about the layout or display. Widgets can be placed on the home screen, while background images and display settings can be changed using the ‘advanced’ menu settings.

A few nagging interface issues bring the Galaxy S down a notch, such as the lack of swipe-based controls for bringing up the system menu or switching applications. Usability is good in most cases, proving that Android can be a user-friendly mobile platform when paired with the right hardware.

Multimedia users are unlikely to be disappointed with the Galaxy S. The phone includes one of the best media players out there, beating out the iPhone and Samsung’s own Wave smartphone. Footage is smooth and stutter-free thanks to the mobile phone’s powerful 1GHz processor, integrated GPU, and crisp four-inch display. Ebooks are readable, although scrolling can become quite tiresome.

With a large display and one of the most impressive versions of Android we’ve seen, the Samsung Galaxy S could be the ultimate non-Apple smartphone. We’re not quite sold on the ‘Swype’ message input system, though with a few software revisions it’s sure to become a standard mobile feature.

Samsung have yet to release pricing information for the Galaxy S, though we suspect that it will be similar to the iPhone 4 given its high-end feature set and timely release date. Apple fans may enjoy their top-of-the-table status now, but with models like the Galaxy S appearing left and right, it could soon be Android that’s in control of the mobile phone operating system world.
